KUCHING, 6 June – The foundation of Sarawak’s long-term progress lies in three core values: unity, education, and the culture of togetherness. These values continue to be championed by local leaders and strengthened through community initiatives.
Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, highlighted the vital role these elements play in ensuring that Sarawak remains a prosperous, united, and progressive state. Speaking at the 75th Anniversary Dinner of the Chan Tian Association on Friday, he reminded the public that associations like Chan Tian represent not just tradition but the heartbeat of a strong community.

“Associations are our pillars of unity where the practice of respecting the elderly, shared values, and the spirit of togetherness are part of our foundation,” said Dr Sim.
He also praised the efforts of the Chinese Youth Association, emphasising that youth participation in such organisations contributes to nation-building. According to him, when youth associations succeed, they lay down a solid base for Sarawak’s future development.
Turning his focus to education, Dr Sim stressed that modern society should no longer use excuses to justify a lack of knowledge. He urged parents and community leaders to support the younger generation in continuing their studies and striving for excellence.
“Education is very important because they are our hope, our future. They are the ones who will continue our culture and help build a better Sarawak,” he said.
He jokingly added, “Otherwise, we have to be prepared to move into our parents’ homes because if we do not educate them well, they will be the ones who will send us there. They will go abroad and never come back.”
In a show of encouragement, Dr Sim presented education incentives to 12 primary school students, 16 secondary school students, and 15 university students during the event. These incentives aim to motivate them to work harder and strive for a brighter future.
This celebration reflects how unity, education, and tradition remain central to shaping the next generation of Sarawakians — a community proud of its roots and focused on a forward-thinking path. — UKAS
