ACCCIS a Key Driver of Sarawak’s Economic Growth: Premier Abang Johari

KUCHING, 15 June 2025 – The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Haji Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg, has praised the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sarawak (ACCCIS) as a strategic and long-term economic partner in the state’s transformation journey.

Speaking at the 60th Anniversary Gala Dinner of ACCCIS held at the Imperial Hotel Kuching, the Premier highlighted the vital role played by ACCCIS since its inception in 1965. “ACCCIS has always been an invaluable partner to the State Government. From the early days of our timber economy to our shift toward green energy, they have been by our side,” he said.

He noted that Sarawak’s economic development has been supported by collaborative efforts with ACCCIS, particularly in securing foreign investments from countries such as Japan, the United States, and across Europe. “These achievements are the result of close cooperation between the Sarawak Government and ACCCIS,” he added.

The Premier also stated that he would continue to rely on ACCCIS for consultation in future industrial investment planning. “When new investment opportunities arise, I will personally engage ACCCIS to help evaluate and connect with potential investors,” he assured.

Touching on Sarawak’s energy roadmap, the Premier explained the state is aiming to generate 10 gigawatts of electricity by 2030, with 60-70% to come from renewable sources. He emphasized that Sarawak’s current energy use stands at 5-6 gigawatts, and the surplus will be exported to neighbouring countries, further boosting state revenue.
