MIRI – Sarawak’s ambitious transformation into a regional smart city hub has taken a leap forward with key developments in Senadin, where plans are underway to attract Chinese investors through Curtin University’s Smart City project.

Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin expressed optimism about Senadin’s potential during a recent event, describing the area as a “majak mansang” — a beacon of progress. He emphasised Senadin’s strategic role as a growing commercial and educational nucleus for Miri, with increasing importance for institutions, shopping centres, clinics, and residential communities.

“The success of this transformation reflects strong collaboration between the government and the people, and leadership that is inclusive and forward-thinking,” said Lee.

The minister underscored the broader goals of the Smart City initiative, which aims to cater not only to Miri’s general population but also to the needs of the ageing community, providing digital and infrastructural solutions to enhance quality of life.

Speaking at the Encapsulation Ceremony of the Senadin Richah Blinds Mill, Lee also highlighted infrastructure projects tied to Miri’s growth. These include the Kuala Baram ditch upgrade to support the Miri Ship Dock Terminal and the new cable bridge linking Kampung Pulau Melayu and Marina Bay—now recognised as an iconic landmark.

He further shared the government’s plans to construct over 100 kilometres of new roads connecting Miri, Marudi, Mulu, and Long Terawan. This development is expected to ease travel for rural residents, boost trade activities, and stimulate local economic growth.

Addressing student needs, Dato Sri Lee urged expanded support for higher education through state-backed initiatives. He cited institutions like Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, i-CATS University College, Curtin University Malaysia, and Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) as key pillars in nurturing local talent and preparing the youth for a digital future.

As Miri positions itself as a smart and sustainable city, strategic investment and educational advancements are set to play a central role in shaping Sarawak’s future.
