Finland Eyes Green Energy and Digital Partnerships with Sarawak

KUCHING – Finland is seeking to deepen its partnership with Sarawak in renewable energy and digitalisation, recognising the state’s growing influence in Southeast Asia’s green transition and sustainable development landscape.

Finnish Ambassador to Malaysia, Anne Vasara, conveyed her country’s strong interest in exploring collaboration with Sarawak in strategic sectors such as clean energy, digital technology, education, and forestry during a courtesy call on Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg. The meeting took place in conjunction with International Energy Week (IEW) 2025, currently held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

“We see many opportunities for cooperation, especially in the areas of renewable energy and digitalisation. Finland has strong expertise in green transition, smart technology, and education, and we believe these can complement Sarawak’s aspirations,” said Vasara.

She also highlighted the long-standing collaborations in the forestry sector, while pointing to potential joint efforts in modernising agricultural industries such as palm oil through sustainable and innovative practices.

Vasara noted that Finland is increasingly focused on strengthening its bilateral ties with Malaysia and the broader Southeast Asian region. “Last May, our Trade and Development Minister visited Sarawak. We’re already planning further visits to enhance cooperation and investment,” she added.

During the discussion, the Finnish envoy extended an official invitation to Premier Abang Zohari to attend the Vaasa Energy Week in Finland—a prestigious green energy and clean technology event, which she described as Finland’s counterpart to Sarawak’s IEW.

The visit underscores growing international recognition of Sarawak as a rising player in clean energy and digital innovation, positioning it as a strategic partner for forward-looking countries like Finland.
