Wong Soon Kai Road Upgrade to Ease Sibu Congestion in Four Months

SIBU – The traffic bottleneck long-faced by Sibu motorists along Wong Soon Kai Road may soon be a thing of the past, with the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) undertaking a key road improvement project expected to be completed in less than four months.

Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Micheal Tiang Ming Tee, said the RM900,000 project involves constructing a 400-metre additional right-turn lane to ease congestion at the busy traffic light intersection linking Jalan Persekutuan and Jalan Ling Kai Cheng.

“Wong Soon Kai Road is a critical commuter route, especially during peak hours when heavy traffic builds up at the junction,” he said during a site visit on Wednesday. “Thanks to SMC for initiating the extension of the turning lane to help alleviate this persistent issue.”

Tiang added that similar improvements are being proposed for Jalan Tek Siong, where another right-turn lane could complement the enhancements on Wong Soon Kai Road to further improve traffic flow.

In addition, the Pelawan State Assemblyman also updated on the Jalan Ling Kai Cheng upgrading project, which is set to begin by mid-August, pending final approval from the resident’s office.

“Most procedures are already complete, and if everything goes smoothly, we’ll launch the project in August,” he said.

He urged residents to remain patient and cooperative, noting that these infrastructure efforts are aimed at ensuring smoother, safer journeys for the Sibu community in the near future.
