LUNDU – A long-awaited water supply improvement is now a reality for residents of the Opar State Assembly (DUN) area, thanks to the newly completed Gravity Piping System Project spearheaded by the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) of Kuching Division in collaboration with the Greater Kuching Development Coordination Agency (GKCDA).
State Assembly Member for Opar, Billy Sujang, announced during the project site handover ceremony at Kampung Kendaie on Saturday that the initiative is a vital development that directly addresses the long-standing water supply challenges faced by villagers, especially in Kampung Kendaie.
A total allocation of RM1.5 million was approved for the project, with RM1.497 million utilised for its full implementation. The system is designed to provide consistent, clean water supply using gravity-based technology, and is part of a broader strategy to strengthen rural water infrastructure in the region.
Billy emphasised that the gravity piping system should be maintained even after the planned construction of a water treatment plant begins in 2026, as it complements the broader water supply framework.
“I want this water issue to be fully resolved. We cannot rely on just one source. The gravity piping system has already benefitted many villages and must be continued,” he stated.
This year alone, 27 water-related projects are being carried out across DUN Opar, amounting to a total allocation of RM13.5 million under GKCDA, underscoring the government’s commitment to water sustainability in rural communities.
During the same ceremony, four additional major gravity piping projects were officially handed over:
- Upgrade Project in Kampung Pasir Tengah
- New Construction Projects in Bukit Batu and Pasir Hili
- New Gravity Pipeline Project in Ranto Panjang, Kampung Pasir Hulu
- Upgrade Project in Kampung Sedaing
The event was graced by several key officials, including Niponi Undek (Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier), Awang Yusup Awang Mostapha (Lundu District Officer), Ir Ts Awang Muhamad Ayahtullah Awang Najeri (JBALB Engineer, Kuching Division), Mohd Badrulhisyam Muta-ee (GKCDA Admin Officer), Pemanca Allen Manium Enggang, and Kampung Kendaie Village Leader Joe Frazer Nyalir.
These initiatives reflect Sarawak’s determination to provide resilient and equitable infrastructure to all communities, ensuring no village is left behind in the state’s developmental journey.
