KUCHING – A 51-year-old man was fined RM2,500 in default five months’ imprisonment by the Magistrates’ Court here today for smashing the front windscreen of a car with a rock at Jalan Central Timur.
Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Wan Ali handed down the sentence after the accused, Lim Teck Chong, pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief. The law provides for imprisonment of up to five years, or a fine, or both upon conviction.
According to the charge sheet, Lim had intentionally damaged the car belonging to a 33-year-old man by throwing a rock at the vehicle’s front windscreen. The estimated damage was valued at RM600.
The incident took place at approximately 6.20am on July 20, while the car was parked by the roadside at Jalan Central Timur. At the time, the car owner was on duty as a race marshal nearby.
Based on the case facts, Lim was seen kicking traffic cones placed near the area before picking up a rock and hurling it at the car’s windscreen. Several members of the public witnessed the incident, which led to a prompt police report being filed.
Lim was arrested on the same day and brought in for questioning. He was not represented by any legal counsel during today’s court proceedings.
The prosecution emphasized that such reckless acts not only caused property damage but also alarmed the public, especially during an event where safety was a key concern.
The court considered Lim’s guilty plea and the fact that this was his first offence when meting out the sentence.
