KUCHING (Aug 17): More than 8,000 people took part in this year’s Mayor’s Walk at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Boulevard, turning the morning into a lively celebration of unity, wellness, and community spirit.

Leading the three-kilometre walk were Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng and Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who also officiated the flag-off. Participants included families, senior citizens, students, and individuals of all ages who came together to enjoy the simple joy of walking side by side.

In his speech, Wee highlighted that the Mayor’s Walk is more than just a fitness event.

“Just look around you — so many happy faces, families and friends walking together. Since 2017, this walk has been our way of saying: let’s get moving, let’s stay healthy, and let’s grow stronger together,” he said.

Wee emphasised that the walk represents Kuching’s true spirit of togetherness.

“When we walk side by side, we are showing what Kuching really is — one big family. Young or old, big or small, everyone belongs here. That is the MBKS spirit: no one is left behind,” he added.

The Mayor further urged participants to treasure the memories created during the event.

“Today, don’t just count the steps — count the smiles, the friendships, and the memories we are building together. Every step we take is towards a healthier, happier, and more united Kuching.”

The joyful atmosphere was lifted even more when the organising committee surprised Dr Sim with a birthday cake in celebration of his 60th birthday, which the crowd warmly joined in singing.

Adding to the day’s activities, participants also enjoyed a zumba session and a lucky draw, making the event a wholesome gathering for all.

The Mayor’s Walk, which began in 2017, has now become a highly anticipated tradition in Kuching. Each year, it continues to strengthen its mission of promoting fitness, friendship, and unity at the heart of the city.
