According to Lutong Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) chief, Henry Jugah, his team received an emergency call at 2.55pm before dispatching six firefighters to the scene.

“Upon arrival, it was found that the fire involved a block of temporary workers’ houses consisting of eight units. The structure was already fully engulfed in flames, with the entire block 100 per cent destroyed,” he said.

The fire brigade acted quickly, deploying a 200-foot stream, two mechanical pump jets, and water from a mechanical tank to put out the blaze. Firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the flames and ensure the safety of nearby structures.

The firefighting operation was successfully completed at 4.44pm. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident, though the residents lost their homes and belongings.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, while arrangements are being made to provide temporary assistance for the affected workers and their families.

This fire has once again highlighted the vulnerability of workers living in temporary housing structures, where safety risks are often higher due to building materials and shared facilities. Local leaders and community organisations are expected to step forward to provide support for the displaced residents in the coming days.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department has reminded the public to always prioritise fire safety, especially in densely populated residential areas. Regular checks on electrical wiring, the use of proper cooking equipment, and awareness of fire hazards are among the key measures to reduce risks of similar incidents.
