KUCHING — Emphasizing the state’s rich cultural fabric as a strategic asset, Sarawak’s Tourism, Creative Industries, Performing Arts and Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister, Dato’ Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, highlighted the importance of embracing the state’s multi-ethnic heritage to enhance tourism appeal and reinforce national identity.
Speaking at the Heritage Aspiration Night 2025, held at the Sarawak branch of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) in the Cultural Centre, Abdul Karim underscored that Sarawak’s tapestry of over 40 sub-ethnic groups fosters both social harmony and positions the state as a premier global tourism destination.
He encouraged participants attending the concurrent International Translation Conference 2025 to delve into local cultural expressions—be it traditional cuisine, artistic performances, or historical sites—to nurture deeper appreciation of the state’s pluralistic roots.
He remarked, “I am confident that this experience will provide a deep understanding of the meaning of living in diversity.”
In addition to championing cultural appreciation, the minister issued a call to younger generations to become custodians of Sarawak’s heritage amid the pressures of globalization. While warning that external influences easily penetrate the lives of youth, he insisted they rise as “heirs of the trust” to keep art, language, and cultural traditions alive.
Abdul Karim also extended his gratitude to the conference’s organizers, asserting that such forums catalyse regional and global collaboration. He expressed hope that the gathering would spur “closer cooperation, more creative innovation, and more excellent knowledge achievements in the future.”
The focus on international cooperation echoes the broader ambition of Sarawak to raise its international profile through culture-led tourism. In related developments, the state has seen growth in education tourism 2500 international students enrolled in 2024 and a rise in initiatives blending modern research with traditional wisdom.
By drawing attention to the intrinsic value of cultural diversity, Sarawak reinforces its identity while forging new paths in tourism development and creative collaboration across borders.
