KUCHING – The new Type 2 Klinik Kesihatan (KK) in Tabuan Jaya is nearing completion, promising to expand healthcare access for residents of Tabuan Jaya, Samarahan (up to UNIMAS), and Stutong areas.
The RM24 million facility is designed to cater to approximately 800–1,000 patients daily, with a workforce comprising 148 personnel, including 28 doctors and one family physician specialist.
The project, part of the Ministry of Health Malaysia’s (KKM) 10th Malaysia Plan under Rolling Plan 1, was awarded to a contractor in December 2021 after three tenders.
Originally slated for completion in June 2024, the project received an extension of time due to additional fire safety requirements and is now expected to open in October 2025.
Unlike the first Type 2 KK in Petra Jaya, which was locally designed, KK Tabuan Jaya follows KKM’s pre-approved plan, highlighting potential considerations for future Type 2 KKs in Sarawak to adopt locally tailored designs.
The clinic will offer comprehensive services, but officials note challenges remain, including limited parking for only 100 vehicles despite the clinic’s capacity to handle up to 1,000 patients daily.
The facility’s success will depend on adequate staff deployment from KKM Kuala Lumpur to fully utilize its resources.
Sarawak’s current healthcare infrastructure includes 4,275 hospital beds and 4,614 doctors, leaving a shortfall of 1,925 beds and 2,649 doctors.
Additional investments, including RM17 billion for underdeveloped hospitals and KKs, are needed to meet growing demand.
The opening of KK Tabuan Jaya represents a significant step toward improving public healthcare delivery in Sarawak, addressing both accessibility and quality of care for the local population.
