Sarawak Energy Launches Feasibility Study for Sungai Tutoh Hydro

TELANG USAN – A ceremonial blessing was held on Monday for the feasibility study of a proposed cascading hydropower project along Sungai Tutoh in the Baram region.

The event, organized by Sarawak Energy in collaboration with the state Utilities Ministry, marks a preliminary step toward developing a new renewable energy source for the area.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department Datuk Gerawat Gala, who is also the Mulu assemblyman, officiated the ceremony alongside Telang Usan Assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau.

In his address, Datuk Gerawat emphasized that the project aims to provide sustainable and clean energy while creating economic opportunities and improving living standards for local communities.

The proposed initiative will utilize a cascading power source model, involving the construction of small-scale dams designed to minimize ecological disruption.

The deputy minister stressed the importance of a prudent approach, including comprehensive consultation with residents, to ensure community welfare and environmental sustainability are prioritized.

The event was attended by Telang Usan District Officer Ezra Uda, community leaders representing the Penan and Kayan communities, and local residents.

Datuk Gerawat described the ceremony as a symbolic beginning, expressing hope that the project would proceed with blessings and community support.
