OSAKA – The Sarawak Ministry of Women, Child Development and Community Welfare has embarked on a study visit to the Osaka Expo 2025, focusing on innovative strategies to strengthen disaster preparedness, promote inclusivity, and enhance community resilience.
Led by Minister Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, the delegation explored the Shelter Lab: Designing for Disasters exhibition, which showcased sustainable and disaster-resilient shelter concepts tailored for vulnerable groups, including women, children, and senior citizens.
The designs emphasised safety, accessibility, and adaptability during emergencies.
The visit also included participation in a Home Evacuation for Collapsed Houses rescue training, where delegates learned hands-on techniques for saving lives in the aftermath of structural collapses.
The session, conducted by disaster response specialists, introduced international best practices and reinforced community-based strategies for emergency situations.
Dato Sri Fatimah highlighted the importance of these experiences in bolstering the work of the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN).
“By adapting international best practices and innovative solutions, we can improve emergency response, strengthen community resilience, and protect vulnerable people more effectively. This knowledge will also guide the formulation of policies and programmes suited to local needs,” she said.
The delegation included Deputy Minister of Community Welfare Development Datuk Mohamad Razi Sitam, Deputy State Secretary (Administration) and JPBN Deputy Chairman Datu Buckland Bangik, JPBN Secretary Abdul Wahab Rahim, Deputy Permanent Secretary Nur Alina Abdullah, Welfare Department Director Semawi Mohamad, and other ministry and agency officials.
The visit underscores Sarawak’s commitment to integrating global expertise into local disaster management frameworks, ensuring that preparedness measures are both inclusive and sustainable.
