PARIS – At the International Forum on Pumped Storage Hydropower held at UNESCO House in Paris on 9–10 September 2025, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg presented a forward-looking roadmap that positions Sarawak as a powerhouse in clean energy innovation.
The Premier’s keynote, entitled “Driving the Energy Transition: Sarawak’s Roadmap for Renewable and Sustainable Growth”, outlined a bold vision for the state’s transformation from energy producer to renewable energy leader in Asia.
Speaking at the global gathering of energy leaders and policymakers, he outlined Sarawak’s ambition to expand energy generation to 10 gigawatts (GW) by 2030, anchored on abundant hydro, solar, and biomass resources. The initiative is expected to reduce carbon emissions while spurring an inclusive, green economy.
Central to this strategy is the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P), which charts a framework to decarbonise the state’s energy system.
Built around seven strategic pillars including renewable energy, natural gas, energy efficiency, low-carbon mobility, clean hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), and alternative energy SET-P is projected to deliver a cumulative GDP boost of RM550 billion, create over 80,000 jobs, and attract between RM580 billion and RM700 billion in investments by 2050.
More than 75% of these benefits are intended to reach low- and middle-income communities, reinforcing a transition that is both equitable and inclusive.
To further support implementation, Sarawak plans to establish a State Energy Council by 2026. This body will align stakeholders across both public and private sectors to ensure coherent policy execution.
Premier Abang Johari’s participation at this international forum interacting with global stakeholders, including the IHA President Malcolm Turnbull, underscores Sarawak’s growing recognition on the world stage as a green energy innovator.
