KUCHING – Malaysia and Australia are celebrating seven decades of diplomatic relations this year, with cooperation spanning defence, security, trade, and people-to-people exchanges.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian highlighted the significance of the 70th anniversary, noting its alignment with the 80th commemoration of victory in the Pacific and the liberation of Borneo during World War II.
Speaking aboard the HMAS Cape Schanck in Kuching on Thursday, Dr. Sim emphasized that the bilateral relationship has evolved into a comprehensive strategic partnership focused on economic prosperity, social and technological advancement, and regional security.
He underscored the role of grassroots connections, citing the hundreds of thousands of Malaysians, including Sarawakians, who have studied, worked, or lived in Australia.
Dr. Sim shared his personal ties to Australia, having received medical training in Melbourne over 17 years before returning to Sarawak to establish the first public heart centre in Borneo, which has served over 200,000 patients.
He praised the enduring partnership between the two nations as a foundation for regional stability and prosperity.
The event also featured a tour of HMAS Cape Schanck, a Royal Australian Navy patrol vessel designed for maritime surveillance. Its visit to Malaysian waters marks a rare deployment north of the equator, symbolizing strengthened defence ties.
The ship’s presence aligns with broader efforts to enhance maritime security cooperation, reflecting Australia’s commitment to Indo-Pacific stability.
Attendees included Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries, and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, and Australian diplomatic and defense representatives.
