Marudi Unveils Sarawak’s First Smart Traffic Lights, Marks Rural Development Milestone

Marudi Unveils Sarawak’s First Smart Traffic Lights, Marks Rural Development Milestone

MARUDI – Marudi has become the first town in rural Sarawak to install smart traffic lights, marking a significant milestone in regional infrastructure modernization.

Datuk Dr. Penguang Manggil, Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government and Marudi State Assemblyman, officiated the inauguration on Friday, describing the project as a historic moment for the community.

“This is not just about signals and sensors, it’s proof that development reaches beyond urban centres,” he said. “The government is ensuring progress touches every corner, including our remote districts.”

The intelligent system, designed to optimize traffic flow and enhance road safety, is expected to reduce congestion and improve commuting efficiency for residents and visitors alike. It also sets a precedent for future smart infrastructure rollouts across other rural towns in Sarawak.

In another major announcement, Datuk Dr. Penguang revealed that the long-awaited ground-breaking ceremony for the Miri–Marudi Road will take place on 20 September 2025, to be led by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg.

The upgrade is projected to transform socio-economic mobility, unlock job opportunities, and significantly raise living standards in the region.

He also extended an invitation to the public to participate in the Baram Regatta 2025, scheduled from 18 to 21 September.

Described as a vibrant celebration of Baram’s cultural heritage, the event promises to boost local commerce through side markets, food stalls, and traditional performances, further strengthening community resilience and tourism potential.
