The development, slated for completion by May 2027, aims to enhance regional connectivity and support urban expansion in the area.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas highlighted the project’s strategic importance for the district’s long-term growth.

He noted that discussions with contractors are actively progressing, though land acquisition challenges remain a significant hurdle.

Currently, resolution of these land issues has progressed less than one percent, requiring urgent coordination with the Land and Survey Department to prevent delays.

In light of recent severe flooding events across Sarawak including unprecedented inundation in Bintulu in January 2025, which displaced over 5,800 residents, officials are prioritizing flood mitigation measures.

Uggah emphasized the need to strengthen disaster response systems ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, citing the region’s vulnerability to extreme rainfall and high tides.

To support affected communities, RM1,000 in aid was distributed to verified flood victims. Officials stressed that assistance must be accurately targeted, requiring confirmation from the Resident’s Office for those not relocating to evacuation centres. The goal is to ensure transparency and equity in relief distribution.

The project also underscores broader efforts to modernize Sarawak’s transport network, complementing other key developments like the recently opened Tun Taib Mahmud Bridge, which began operations in March 2025.
