Fallen Tree Snags Electricity Cable on Hua Ban Street in Sarikei

SARKEI: Residents of Jalan Hua Ban were met with an unexpected hazard last night when a large tree fell and became entangled in a Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) electricity cable, according to Sarikei Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Chief, Arrahman Chik.

The fire brigade received an emergency call at approximately 7.09pm, prompting swift action from the team. Senior Fire Officer (PBK) II Teo Beng Khim led the operation to secure the area and remove the obstruction.

“Upon arrival, it was confirmed that a tree had fallen and was caught in SEB’s electrical cables,” Arrahman said. “We immediately assessed the risk to ensure the safety of nearby residents and motorists.”

Firefighters employed chainsaws to cut the tree branches carefully, ensuring no further damage to the live electricity cables. The removal process required precision and coordination, highlighting the importance of trained emergency responders in such situations.

“The operation to cut and remove the fallen tree branches lasted approximately 46 minutes,” Arrahman added. “All special services at the scene were fully completed by 8.17pm.”

Authorities have reminded residents to remain vigilant during sudden weather changes, as falling trees can pose serious threats to both property and public safety. Sarawak Energy Berhad has also been notified to inspect the affected cables and ensure power lines are safe for the surrounding area.

No injuries were reported, but the incident caused temporary disruption to the immediate traffic flow on Jalan Hua Ban. Emergency personnel urged motorists to slow down and adhere to safety instructions when passing areas affected by fallen trees or other obstacles.

This incident serves as a timely reminder of the importance of reporting hazards promptly and the crucial role of fire and rescue services in maintaining public safety.
