Ops Sapu Bintulu: 66 Illegal Immigrants Arrested in Major Crackdown

BINTULU – The Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) Sarawak has once again intensified its enforcement efforts through “Ops Sapu”, which was carried out in Bintulu yesterday. The large-scale operation targeted areas suspected of harbouring illegal immigrants, reflecting the department’s firm stand against immigration offences in the state.

The operation was conducted by a team of 24 officers and members from the Sarawak Special Action Team (PTK) together with the Bintulu Immigration Enforcement Unit. Their mission was clear – to curb the presence of undocumented migrants and ensure compliance with Malaysian immigration laws.

During the operation, officers conducted inspections on 84 individuals at several identified hotspots around Bintulu town. From the checks, 66 individuals were detained for committing various immigration offences. Among those arrested were 64 men and 2 women, all believed to be foreign nationals working and residing illegally in the country.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the offences committed included not possessing valid travel documents, overstaying beyond the permitted duration, and abusing social visit passes for work purposes. All detainees are being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63 before further legal action is taken.

JIM Sarawak, in a statement, emphasised that such operations are not a one-off effort but will be conducted continuously to ensure strict enforcement of immigration laws. The department stressed that the presence of illegal immigrants not only threatens national security but also creates social and economic challenges for the local community.

Authorities also urged members of the public to play their part by channelling credible information regarding the presence of illegal immigrants. JIM highlighted that community cooperation is vital in ensuring the success of these enforcement actions, which ultimately aim to protect the welfare and safety of Malaysians.

This operation stands as proof of the government’s commitment to strengthening immigration control and preventing the misuse of entry permits. With ongoing efforts, JIM Sarawak has vowed to remain vigilant in monitoring, investigating, and taking action against those who flout the law. – Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia Sarawak
