KUCHING – The Juma’ani In Vitro Orchid Micropropagation (JIVOM) Project at MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) Kuching received a major boost following the inaugural visit of the Patron of the Sarawak Orchid Society (Saroso), Dayang Norjihan Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari, on Thursday.
Her visit drew attention to the groundbreaking project, which combines education, science, and environmental preservation. Dayang Norjihan toured the Orchid Laboratory and the mini Orchid Garden, which is home to more than 80 orchid species, including several endangered varieties.
MRSM Kuching Deputy Principal of Talent Development, McManus Singh, said the collaboration between MRSM Kuching and Saroso is vital in safeguarding Sarawak’s rich orchid heritage.
“MRSM Kuching is honoured to be the pioneer of this project. What makes it more remarkable is that the orchid breeding and care are carried out entirely by students in our Orchid Laboratory,” he said.
Currently, three student groups are actively involved in the JIVOM initiative. They are scheduled to represent Malaysia at an international programme in Germany next year, where they will present their research findings on orchid micropropagation.
According to McManus, Dayang Norjihan’s presence and encouragement gave new motivation to the students and staff. “This visit not only highlights the importance of conserving endangered orchid species but also inspires our students to continue innovating at the global level,” he added.
The JIVOM project is the first of its kind in Malaysia, making MRSM Kuching the only institution with a systematic orchid micro-breeding laboratory. The initiative is also aligned with MRSM’s mission to nurture well-rounded students in academics, leadership, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
With the support of Saroso and continuous student involvement, the JIVOM project is set to expand further, enhancing both local conservation efforts and Malaysia’s international recognition in the field of orchid research.
