SRI AMAN – Rapid development in Sri Aman is poised to significantly boost local economic activity while creating opportunities for new iconic events beyond the annual Benak Festival.
The region’s unique geography along the Batang Lupar River, renowned for its tidal bore phenomenon, offers a strategic advantage for hosting cultural and sporting attractions.
Key infrastructure projects like the Batang Lupar Bridge II, slated for completion in early 2026, are expected to serve as catalysts for large-scale events.
Mohd Shah Achang, Temenggong of the Malay Community, emphasized the bridge’s potential to host marathons linking Sri Aman to Betong, thereby attracting broader visitor engagement.
The bridge, soaring 145.5 meters with an 870-metre span, will become Malaysia’s tallest cable-stayed structure, reducing travel distance between Sri Aman and Betong from 71 kilometres to 28 kilometres and cutting travel time by half.
Community leaders highlighted the economic benefits of such initiatives. Leonard Libau Anol, Temenggong of the Iban Community, noted that events like the Benak Festival enable locals to promote handicrafts, traditional foods, and regional products, fostering entrepreneurship.
Kueh Aik Seng, Temenggong of the Chinese Community, added that improved infrastructure would enhance connectivity and stimulate cross-district trade.
The 22nd Benak Festival, held from September 19–21, featured regattas, trail runs, and cultural performances, aligning with the state’s goal to position Sri Aman as an international tourism destination.
The Sarawak government’s proposal for a Regatta Circuit further aims to coordinate water sports events statewide, reinforcing unity and economic growth.
