Eco-Tourism in Kampung Temaga Dayak to Drive Economic Growth

SEMATAN – Plans to enhance ecotourism at Kampung Temaga Dayak are gaining momentum, with a proposed campsite and hiking trails to the village waterfall expected to generate fresh income opportunities while conserving its natural environment.

During the SMART Community Award 2025 Evaluation Visit on Monday, Opar Assemblyman Billy Sujang highlighted the potential of the initiative, urging villagers to prepare a formal proposal for submission to the relevant authorities to secure funding for infrastructure.

“The ecotourism initiative not only creates income opportunities but also ensures that environmental sustainability is safeguarded for the benefit of future generations,” he said.

Billy praised the community’s vision in turning ecotourism into an economic driver. He recommended planting canopy trees to provide shade while maintaining the rustic charm of the site.

He also encouraged the use of tour guides, particularly for mountain hiking, to strengthen visitor safety.

According to Billy, with consistent effort, Kampung Temaga Dayak could earn recognition in the SMART Community competition and serve as a model for rural economic growth in Opar.

Ecotourism has become an increasingly important sector in Sarawak, balancing the preservation of natural landscapes with opportunities for community-led economic development.

The initiative at Kampung Temaga Dayak reflects this broader trend, offering both locals and visitors a sustainable approach to enjoying nature.
