Kuching Civic Centre Roof Upgrade Records Steady Progress

KUCHING – The dismantling and reinstallation works for the new roof of the Kuching Civic Centre Building, Phase 1 – Main Tower Roof, are moving steadily, with progress currently recorded at 16.61 percent.

According to the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR), the project is targeted for early completion by the end of 2025. The initiative, which involves dismantling the old structure and installing a new roof system, is being carried out to ensure the safety, durability, and long-term resilience of the Civic Centre’s main tower.

Sarawak Director of Public Works recently conducted a site visit to assess the work and monitor its progress. The inspection confirmed that the project implementation is on schedule and meeting the required standards.

The Kuching Civic Centre, long regarded as one of the city’s iconic landmarks, has hosted countless cultural, social, and community events since its establishment. The current upgrade reflects the government’s commitment to preserving and modernising important public facilities while maintaining their heritage value.

JKR Sarawak explained that the new roof will not only extend the building’s lifespan but also enhance functionality and comfort for users. Once completed, the improved structure is expected to provide better protection against weather conditions and create a safer environment for future events.

The Phase 1 works form part of a larger effort to ensure that the Civic Centre remains relevant as a premier venue for public gatherings in Kuching. The project is also seen as a step towards strengthening the city’s infrastructure in line with Sarawak’s vision of sustainable development.
