‘Little Pakistan’ Raided: Foreign Begging Syndicate Exposed in Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR – The Immigration Department of Kuala Lumpur uncovered a large-scale begging activity involving foreign nationals during a massive operation at Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, often dubbed as “Little Pakistan”, on Friday night.

Director of the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department (JIM), Wan Mohammed Saupee Wan Yusoff, said several foreigners believed to be beggars were found disguising themselves as tourists to avoid detection.

“Some of these individuals, mostly from South Asian countries, claimed they were tourists when arrested. However, their tricks failed when officers found large amounts of RM1 banknotes in their possession, as well as in several rented rooms they occupied,” he revealed during a press conference at the operation site.

The area, popular among locals and tourists for its variety of restaurants, especially those serving Pakistani cuisine, was identified as a hotspot for such activities.

“This location is well-known as a food hub, attracting many visitors. Unfortunately, certain individuals took advantage of the crowd to carry out begging activities,” Wan Mohammed Saupee explained.

He added that most of the detained foreigners were also working at restaurants in the vicinity.

“The Immigration Department has no issue with legitimate businesses, as long as all regulations, particularly immigration laws, are strictly followed. However, complaints had been received earlier that this area is increasingly filled with foreign nationals, mainly Pakistanis. This operation confirmed those claims,” he said.

The integrated raid, which began at 9.30pm, was conducted in collaboration with multiple enforcement agencies. In total, 199 individuals were arrested, including several local employers, for various immigration offences.

Authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing and stern action will be taken against those who exploit begging as a source of income while staying in the country illegally.
