Eight Injured After Tourist Boat Capsizes During Parasailing in Langkawi

ALOR SETAR – Eight people, including six tourists and two crew members, were injured after a boat carrying parasailing tourists capsized near Pantai Tengah, Langkawi, this afternoon.

Langkawi District Deputy Police Chief Supt Samsulmuddin Sulaiman said the police received a report about the incident at around 1.15pm from members of the public who witnessed the mishap.

“The boat was carrying six tourists, namely three men, two women and a boy, along with two crew members. At the time of the incident, some of the tourists were parasailing, but they managed to land safely before the boat overturned,” he said in a statement.

He added that the incident is believed to have been caused by strong winds that hit the area suddenly, leading to the boat losing balance and capsizing.

“All victims were successfully rescued by members of the public who were present at the scene before being handed over to medical personnel. Initial information shows that none of the victims suffered serious injuries. They are now receiving treatment at Sultanah Maliha Hospital,” he said.

Authorities have confirmed that the situation is under control and that investigations are ongoing. The Marine Police and other related agencies are expected to review safety measures for parasailing and water sports operators in Langkawi following the incident.

Langkawi, one of Malaysia’s top tourist destinations, is popular for its beach attractions and water sport activities. However, this latest incident has raised concerns about the safety of parasailing and boating activities, especially during periods of unpredictable weather conditions.

Tourists and operators are advised to monitor weather updates closely before engaging in water-based activities. Authorities have also reminded operators to ensure that safety protocols and equipment are always in place to prevent similar incidents in the future. — Bernama
