Smokers Caught as Tobacco Law Hits Full Force

Health Officers Step Up Tobacco Law Enforcement Across Kuching

KUCHING — A series of large-scale enforcement operations were conducted across several key locations in Kuching between 29 September and 4 October 2025, following the full enforcement of the Tobacco Products Control for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852) on 1 October 2025.

According to the Sarawak State Health Department, the week-long operations were carried out at multiple areas including The Best Corner Batu 4, Lepapa Jalan Arang, Pine Square, Emart Batu Kawa, Tabuan Tranquility, Simpang Tiga, Tabuan Jaya, King Centre, Jalan Padungan, Kenyalang Market, and Jalan McDougall.

The enforcement was part of a continuous effort to ensure compliance with the new tobacco control law, which aims to protect public health and reduce exposure to cigarette smoke and vape emissions in public spaces.

The operation not only focused on the smoking ban in prohibited areas, but also on the registration and control of tobacco products, vaping materials, and tobacco substitute products. Officers also inspected product sales, packaging, and labeling compliance to ensure adherence to the standards outlined under Act 852.

Despite ongoing public awareness campaigns and notices, health authorities reported that many violations were still detected, particularly involving individuals smoking or vaping in designated non-smoking zones.

Officials warned that such offences will not be taken lightly, and that continuous enforcement operations will be conducted to deter repeat violations. The Health Office emphasised its commitment to safeguarding public health and reminded the public to respect smoke-free zones in the interest of community well-being.

The Tobacco Products Control for Public Health Act 2024 represents a major milestone in Malaysia’s efforts to regulate tobacco and vape use, signalling a stricter stance toward creating a healthier smoke-free environment across the nation.
