Sarawak to Host 17 Sports as SEA Games 2027 Preparations Gain Momentum

KUCHING – Sarawak is intensifying preparations for its role as a co-host of the 2027 SEA Games, with a focus on strengthening inter-agency coordination and operational readiness through the SEA Games 2027 Organising Committee Coordination Workshop.

The workshop, led by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MYSED), aims to streamline planning and align responsibilities among all departments and agencies involved in staging the regional sporting event.

Permanent Secretary of MYSED, Morshidi Fredrick, said the session provided a vital platform for participants to share perspectives, evaluate logistical needs, and ensure that all preparations stay on schedule.

“A total of 11 contingents, comprising approximately 5,000 athletes, will take part in 37 sporting disciplines during the 2027 SEA Games. Out of that number, 17 sports will be hosted in Sarawak, underscoring the state’s key role as one of the main venues for the Games,” he said.

He added that the workshop marks an essential first step in achieving effective coordination across ministries, departments, and partner agencies, all of which are integral to delivering a successful event.

Morshidi announced that the Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, will serve as Chairman of the 2027 SEA Games Organising Committee.

Meanwhile, Deputy State Secretary (Operations) Datu Hii Chang Kee has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Games.

“Their appointments reflect the Sarawak Government’s strong commitment to hosting at international standards and ensuring that the Games run seamlessly,” he added.

The workshop also saw the participation of Khairul Nizam Morshidi, Acting CEO of the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) and Acting Director of the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS), alongside representatives from multiple government departments and agencies.

The 34th SEA Games, scheduled for 2027, will take place across four key locations, Sarawak, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, and Penang, with Sarawak set to be the focal point for numerous marquee events.

This initiative reaffirms Sarawak’s growing reputation as a hub for regional sporting excellence and its readiness to deliver a world-class sporting experience.
