ASAJAYA – The Sarawak State Senior Citizens Sports League 2026 continued with great success on 11 July, as the petanque tournament was held at the Datuk Ir. Aidel Lariwoo Petanque Arena in Asajaya. The event brought together senior athletes from across the state, proving that age is no barrier to sporting excellence and active living.
Organised by the Sarawak State Youth and Sports Department in collaboration with the Sarawak State Boules Sports Association, the competition attracted 44 participants aged 60 and above. Among them were 36 men and eight women, all eager to showcase their skills in the traditional French sport that has gained popularity in Sarawak over recent years.
The programme was designed to encourage older citizens to remain active, healthy, and socially engaged through participation in sports suited to their age group. Beyond competition, the event fostered camaraderie and strengthened friendships among participants, reflecting the league’s wider mission of promoting wellness and community spirit.
Petanque, a sport that requires precision, strategy, and focus, has become increasingly popular among senior citizens in Sarawak. Its accessibility and low physical strain make it an ideal choice for older athletes, while still offering the thrill of competition. The Asajaya tournament highlighted how the sport can serve as both recreation and a platform for discovering new talent.
A key objective of the league is to identify outstanding players who can represent Sarawak at the national level. From this tournament, four male winners and four female winners will be selected to compete in upcoming national competitions, ensuring that Sarawak remains well-represented in senior sports.
The event was attended by several distinguished figures, including His Excellency Tuan Lamat Anak Nyalau, Director of the Sarawak State Youth and Sports Department; His Excellency Datuk Wan Abdillah Edruce bin Wan Abdul Rahman, President of the Sarawak State Boules Sports Association; and His Excellency Puan Fatimah binti Abdul Rahman, Assistant Director of the Sports Development Division. Their presence underscored the importance of supporting senior sports and recognising the contributions of older athletes to Sarawak’s sporting landscape.
Officials emphasised that the Senior Citizens Sports League is not only about competition but also about promoting an active lifestyle among older residents. By providing opportunities for participation, the programme helps combat sedentary habits and encourages seniors to remain physically and socially engaged.
Participants expressed enthusiasm for the event, noting that it provided a chance to stay fit while enjoying the company of peers. Many highlighted the sense of achievement in competing and the joy of being part of a supportive sporting community.
The Asajaya tournament also demonstrated the state’s commitment to inclusivity in sports development. By creating platforms for senior citizens, Sarawak ensures that sporting opportunities are available to all age groups, reinforcing the message that health and activity are lifelong pursuits.
As the Senior Citizens Sports League 2026 continues, organisers hope to build on the success of the Asajaya event by expanding participation and raising awareness of the benefits of senior sports. The league stands as a testament to Sarawak’s dedication to fostering a culture of wellness, resilience, and community engagement across generations.
