The replacement project, which cost RM810,000, addresses the persistent malfunctions of the previous units.

Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, the Sarawak Transport Minister, confirmed the operational status after an inspection tour of the terminal on Friday.

He stated that the frequent breakdowns of the old escalators in recent years necessitated this crucial upgrade.

The new units have received official approval from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH).

Minister Lee revealed that while the physical replacement was finished ahead of schedule, operational commencement awaited the implementation of additional safety enhancements requested by DOSH from Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB).

The modernised escalators now feature advanced safety elements, including LED illumination beneath the handrails and steps, and coloured indicator lights at entry and exit points.

During his visit, the minister also reviewed the progress of upgrades to four public conveniences within the terminal. These facilities are anticipated to be fully refurbished by the end of November 2025.

In a separate but related improvement, three aerobridges that were prone to faults have been replaced at an approximate cost of RM4.5 million.

Lee emphasised that these enhancements are interim solutions ahead of a planned comprehensive terminal expansion.

The project is currently in its proposal and design phase, with the future terminal intended to service international, intercontinental, and domestic flights.
