Sarawak Boosts Healthcare Autonomy and Infrastructure

Sarawak Boosts Healthcare Autonomy and Infrastructure

KUCHING – The Sarawak government is taking significant steps to strengthen its healthcare autonomy as provided for under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). This involves major investments in infrastructure and a substantial expansion of medical staffing.

Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Premier and Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, stated that the state is proactively tackling systemic issues.

He highlighted critical staffing deficits and capacity constraints that need resolution to ensure a sustainable health service.

He revealed that the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) currently operates with a team of 5,000 staff, yet they manage a workload designed for 9,000 personnel.

Dr Sim praised the unwavering dedication of healthcare workers who maintain high standards under such demanding conditions.

Under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Johari Openg, the state has committed RM1 billion to construct a new Sarawak Cancer Centre.

This facility is planned to feature 310 beds, a capacity that will surpass similar specialist hospitals in Peninsular Malaysia.

Dr Sim also highlighted collaborative initiatives, such as the temporary accommodation provided by the Sarawak Ministers’ Wives Association for patients and their families from rural areas.

He confirmed that discussions with the federal Ministry of Health are in progress to create 11,000 new positions, with 4,000 of these posts allocated to SGH.

The greater autonomy afforded by MA63 enables Sarawak to plan and invest according to its specific needs and challenges.
