GEDONG – The spirit of camaraderie and physical well-being took centre stage in the Gedong District as the community came together for the Sarawak Day Fun Run 2026.
The event, which featured a 2.27-kilometre route, served as more than just a recreational activity; it was a deliberate effort to instil a culture of healthy living while reinforcing the bonds of unity among residents of all backgrounds.
Organised by the United Bumiputera Party (PBB) Gedong Branch, the programme was held at the Datuk Patinggi Ali Hall. It stood out as one of the key highlights of the district’s Sarawak Day celebrations, drawing a diverse crowd that included families, youths, and senior citizens.
The atmosphere was described as lively and harmonious, reflecting the shared enthusiasm for both the holiday and the promotion of an active lifestyle.
Beyond the run itself, the event offered a variety of engaging activities designed to keep participants entertained and involved. Morning aerobics sessions kicked off the festivities, encouraging attendees to stretch and prepare for the run.
Sports demonstrations and interactive games were also part of the lineup, ensuring that there was something for everyone regardless of age or fitness level. A lucky draw added an element of excitement, with prizes awarded to fortunate participants, further boosting morale and engagement.
To extend the celebratory mood into the afternoon, a friendly football competition was organised. This tournament brought together teams from various sectors of the local administration and community leadership.
Participants included staff from the Gedong District Office, members of the Gedong District Council, representatives from the Office of the Chief Village Head and Chief Youth Leader (KMKK), and officials from the PBB Gedong Branch.
The football match was not merely about competition but served as a strategic platform for strengthening interpersonal relationships. By playing together on the field, civil servants, community leaders, and local residents had the opportunity to interact in a relaxed setting.
This interaction helped to break down formal barriers, fostering a sense of friendship and cooperation that extends beyond the sports ground. The spirit of sportsmanship displayed during the game underscored the importance of teamwork and mutual respect in building a cohesive society.
The organisation of such community-based activities aligns with the broader objectives of the Sarawak Day celebrations. These events are designed to encourage active participation from the grassroots level, instilling values of patriotism and togetherness.
By focusing on health and unity, the organisers aim to create a sustainable model for community engagement that can be replicated in future years.
Furthermore, the event acted as a bridge between government agencies and the public. It provided a neutral space where officials and residents could connect on a personal level, reinforcing trust and collaboration.
This synergy is crucial for achieving the state’s aspiration of building a society that is not only prosperous but also active, united, and resilient.
Key figures present to support the initiative included Gedong District Officer Jamain Wahab and Ali Bujang, the Vice Head of the PBB Gedong Branch Movement.
Their presence highlighted the official endorsement of the programme and the commitment of local leadership to promoting community welfare.
The day’s activities were scheduled to conclude with the closing ceremony of the friendly football competition. This final segment was expected to be officiated by Dato Sri Mohd Naroden Majais, the Special Representative of the Gedong Assemblyman, in the afternoon.
His involvement signified the high level of political and administrative support for initiatives that blend celebration with social development.
As the sun set on Gedong, the success of the Fun Run and associated activities demonstrated the power of sport and community gathering in strengthening social fabric. The event left participants with a renewed sense of pride in their identity and a commitment to maintaining healthy habits.
It served as a testament to how local celebrations can be leveraged to promote positive societal values, ensuring that the spirit of Sarawak Day resonates deeply within the hearts of its people.
