MIRI: The Miri District Police Headquarters (IPD) successfully seized 18 motorcycles during a targeted street gang operation last night, aimed at curbing illegal modifications and maintaining road safety.
The operation, conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division, began at 11.00 pm and continued until 4.00 am. Seven officers, including two senior police personnel, participated, focusing on high-risk areas such as Jalan Bandaraya Miri, Jalan Piasau, Jalan Pulau Melayu, Jalan Miri Bypass, and Jalan Marina.
Miri District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner (ACP) Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, explained that the main goal of the operation was to combat street gang activities while ensuring compliance with traffic laws.
“A total of 33 vehicles were inspected, and 18 motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 due to illegal modifications,” he said.
During the operation, 45 individuals—42 men and three women—were also inspected. Five men, aged 18 to 27, were taken to the Miri IPD Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division for urine tests, which confirmed they were free from drugs.
In addition, the police issued 82 summonses for various traffic offences. ACP Mohd Farhan emphasized that these operations will continue periodically to curb street thug activities that endanger other road users.
He warned motorcyclists and drivers against illegal vehicle modifications, street racing, and gathering at roadside locations causing congestion and noise.
