KUCHING – The Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus marked a proud milestone as 294 graduates were celebrated at its convocation ceremony held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Thursday.
The ceremony was officiated by Sarawak Premier and Pro Chancellor, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, with the proceedings chaired by Professor John Pollaers OAM, Chancellor of Swinburne University of Technology.
A total of 245 bachelor’s degrees were conferred across a wide range of disciplines. These included 102 in business, 43 in computer science, 36 in engineering, 32 in design, six in information and communication technology, nine in media and communication, and 15 in science. Two graduates also achieved double degrees in Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Robotics and Mechatronics) and Bachelor of Computer Science.
The postgraduate cohort saw 28 master’s degrees awarded. Among them were 21 Master of Business Administration (International) graduates, alongside two Master of Business (Research) recipients.
One graduate each completed the Master of Construction Management, Master of Information Technology, Master of Engineering (Research), Master of Information and Communication Technology (Research), and Master of Science (Research) programmes.
The ceremony also recognised 12 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) graduates, representing fields such as business, engineering, humanities, arts and social sciences, information and communication technology, and science.
In addition, 38 graduates received their awards in absentia, underscoring the broad reach of the university’s academic community.
The event highlighted Swinburne Sarawak’s international profile, with graduates hailing not only from across Malaysia but also from countries including Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Gabon, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Myanmar, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Turkmenistan, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
University officials noted that the convocation reflected Swinburne Sarawak’s role as a hub for global education, producing graduates equipped with skills to contribute to industries worldwide. The Premier, in his address, emphasised the importance of higher education in preparing Sarawak’s youth to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving economy.
The convocation ceremony was described as a meaningful occasion, celebrating not only academic achievement, but also the diversity and international connections fostered by Swinburne Sarawak.
