KUCHING – The city of Kuching has been selected to host the International Council on Archives (ICA) Conference in 2027, a significant coup that places Sarawak firmly on the global cultural heritage map. The official announcement was made at a ceremony in Barcelona, Spain, on 28 October 2025.
The bid was spearheaded by Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, which will lead the conference organisation in close partnership with the National Archives of Malaysia. The endeavour has received full backing from both the Sarawak State Government and the Federal Government of Malaysia.
This prestigious event is expected to draw thousands of archivists, records managers, and heritage professionals from across the globe. The ICA, as the principal global organisation for the archives community, holds a major congress every four years, making this a high-profile international gathering.
During the announcement event, the presence of Sarawak’s Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, was acknowledged by Spain’s Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun Domènech. The international recognition underscores the bid’s strength and Sarawak’s growing profile.
Expressing her gratitude at the Barcelona ceremony, Datu Dr. Rashidah Bolhassan, Deputy Chairman of Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, conveyed the team’s profound honour. “We are truly honoured and deeply grateful for this opportunity to become host for the prestigious conference in 2027,” she stated.
She described the success as a landmark achievement for the state. “To us, it is also a proud achievement and milestone for Sarawak, as we take our place on the international stage in the important fields of archives and records management.”
Dr. Rashidah extended the organising committee’s appreciation to the ICA Selection Committee and Executive Board for their trust. She also thanked the National Archives of Malaysia for their steadfast support and collaboration throughout the bidding process.
The selection is seen as a direct endorsement of Malaysia’s ongoing initiatives to advance its archival systems and preserve national documentary heritage. It reflects significant investment and progress in the sector, which has been noted by international bodies.
The organisers have pledged to deliver a conference that is not only academically and professionally rewarding but also a rich cultural experience. They are committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure the event’s success and its inclusivity for a worldwide audience.
Delegates attending the 2027 conference can also anticipate a warm welcome, famously known as Sarawak Hospitality. They will be encouraged to explore the region’s dynamic cultural tapestry and its stunning natural landscapes, from pristine rainforests to diverse wildlife.
“We look forward to seeing all the participants coming to Kuching for the ICA Conference 2027,” Dr. Rashidah added, issuing a formal invitation to the international community. The event is poised to showcase Kuching’s capacity as a world-class host city for major international conventions.
