Malaysia-US Strengthen Economic Ties with US Secretary of Treasury Meeting

GYEONGJU – High-level financial discussions between Malaysian and American officials have further solidified bilateral economic cooperation. The meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent addressed multiple aspects of the countries’ financial relationship.

The engagement built upon the positive momentum generated during recent diplomatic exchanges, including the visit of President Donald Trump to Kuala Lumpur. Secretary Bessent conveyed Malaysia’s appreciation for the hospitality extended to the American delegation during their stay.

Prime Minister Anwar reiterated his gratitude for President Trump’s visit, noting that such high-level engagements demonstrate a firm commitment from US leadership. He characterized the relationship as constructive, mutually respectful, and beneficial to both nations.

The discussion provided an opportunity to review various dimensions of the Malaysia-US trade and financial partnership. Particular attention was given to mechanisms for strengthening economic ties between the two countries amid global economic uncertainties.

A key focus area was the collaborative work between the US Treasury and Bank Negara Malaysia. Both institutions reaffirmed their joint commitment to maintaining resilient exchange rate policies and ensuring stability within financial markets.

The dialogue also emphasised the importance of transparent governance structures and integrity-based financial practices. These principles are considered fundamental for fostering sustainable economic growth and investor confidence.

Prime Minister Anwar acknowledged the American Secretary’s contributions to enhancing global economic cooperation. He noted ongoing efforts to expand inclusive investment opportunities and develop trade networks based on dialogue and mutual understanding.

Security considerations within the economic relationship were also addressed, reflecting the comprehensive nature of the bilateral partnership. The approach prioritizes fairness and reciprocal comprehension between the nations.

The meeting effectively continued the positive trajectory established during the 47th ASEAN Summit, where initial discussions had taken place. This continuity demonstrates the sustained importance both governments place on their economic relationship.

Malaysia reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening strategic cooperation with the United States based on principles of openness, fairness, and respect. This framework is seen as essential for ensuring regional and global stability, prosperity, and peace.

The constructive dialogue represents ongoing efforts to navigate complex international economic landscapes while preserving national interests. Such regular high-level consultations help maintain alignment between the two countries’ economic policies and objectives.
