TOKYO – Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, has arrived in Japan for a two-day official working visit that underscores the strengthening of ties between Sarawak and Tokyo.
The Premier safely landed at Narita International Airport on Sunday evening, where he was greeted by Malaysia’s Ambassador to Japan, Dato’ Shahril Effendi Abd Ghany.
Upon reaching his hotel, he was welcomed by senior Sarawak officials, including Datu Hamden Mohammad, Director of the Sarawak Forest Department.
During his visit, Abang Johari is scheduled to deliver a keynote address marking the 30th anniversary of cooperation between the Japanese Malaysia Association (JMA) and the Sarawak Forest Department.
This collaboration has been pivotal in rainforest restoration efforts, symbolising three decades of environmental partnership between Sarawak and Japan.
The highlight of the trip will be the conferment of The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star by Emperor Naruhito.
The award, part of Japan’s prestigious Autumn Imperial Decorations 2025, recognises Abang Johari’s outstanding role in advancing bilateral relations.
The honour is one of Japan’s highest decorations, established in 1875, and is awarded for meritorious service to the state.
The Japanese Government acknowledged his contributions in promoting regional exchanges, fostering mutual understanding, and strengthening economic cooperation between Malaysia and Japan.
His leadership has been instrumental in expanding collaboration in renewable energy, particularly in hydrogen and ammonia projects, alongside ensuring stable supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Japan.
Beyond energy, Abang Johari has also championed initiatives with Japanese universities and organisations in forest conservation, biodiversity, and sustainable development.
These efforts align with Sarawak’s ambition to position itself as a green energy-driven state, while also enhancing academic and youth exchanges that lay the groundwork for long-term friendship and cooperation.
Expressing gratitude, the Premier described the award as a recognition not only of his personal efforts but also of Sarawak’s progressive policies in energy and sustainability.
“This award is not for me alone, but for the state of Sarawak – international recognition of the policies we are implementing, especially in the fields of energy, hydrogen and other sectors,” he said.
The visit and award ceremony highlight Sarawak’s growing role in international energy and environmental diplomacy, reinforcing its position as a key partner in Japan’s pursuit of sustainable growth.
