Donation Boosts Bario Clinic With New Medical Equipment

BARIO – Health services in Bario have received a significant boost following the donation of new medical equipment to the local clinic, an initiative supported by Mulu State Assemblyman Datuk Gerawat Gala.

The contribution, valued at RM78,500, includes a defibrillator priced at RM23,500 and an ultrasound machine worth RM55,000.

Both devices are expected to enhance the clinic’s capacity to deliver essential healthcare, ranging from emergency response to maternal care.

Datuk Gerawat explained that the equipment would be particularly beneficial in managing urgent medical cases and supporting pregnant mothers during routine check-ups.

“This equipment is very important to help health workers carry out their duties more efficiently, whether in emergency situations or routine check-ups, to ensure that the well-being of the people in this area continues to be maintained,” he said at the handover ceremony held on Wednesday.

He expressed gratitude to the philanthropist who made the donation possible, acknowledging their concern for rural communities and their commitment to improving healthcare access in remote areas.

The Bario Health Clinic, situated in one of Sarawak’s most isolated highland settlements, has long faced challenges in providing comprehensive medical services due to limited resources and accessibility.

The addition of advanced equipment is expected to reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for specialised care, thereby strengthening local healthcare delivery.

Medical experts present at the ceremony, including Miri Division Health Officer Dr. P. Raviwharmman A/L Packierisamy and Miri Division Chief Family Physician Dr. Maurice Steve Utap, highlighted the importance of equipping rural clinics with modern tools.

They noted that such investments not only improve treatment outcomes but also support preventive and rehabilitative healthcare in underserved communities.

Clinic staff welcomed the donation, describing it as a timely intervention that will allow them to respond more effectively to emergencies and provide better diagnostic services.

The ultrasound machine, in particular, is expected to play a vital role in maternal and child health programmes, while the defibrillator will strengthen emergency preparedness.

The initiative reflects broader efforts to enhance healthcare infrastructure in Sarawak’s rural regions, aligning with state priorities to ensure equitable access to medical services.

By equipping the Bario Health Clinic with modern technology, the donation underscores the importance of community partnerships in bridging healthcare gaps and improving the quality of life for residents in remote areas.
