MIRI – Libraries must continue to evolve as inclusive and dynamic community hubs that foster creativity, knowledge sharing and lifelong learning, said Miri Mayor and Pujut Assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang.
He was speaking at the “Library With Community Day” organised by the Library Section of the Miri City Council (MCC) at Myymall, Lutong.
The event highlighted the role of libraries as more than just repositories of books, positioning them instead as safe and engaging spaces that strengthen intergenerational ties and nurture human development.
Adam Yii emphasised that MCC remains committed to sustainable and people-centred services. He noted that literacy and community programmes are vital investments in human capital, contributing to the creation of a competitive and resilient city.
“The event strengthens engagement between the local authority and residents, encouraging shared responsibility in building a united and progressive city,” he said.
The day-long programme featured a wide range of activities designed to attract families and individuals of all ages. Highlights included the Library Activity Rewards 2025, Most Active Member Awards, a colouring contest, and the Library Loyalty Rewards 2025 presentation. Children also participated in a creative costume competition, showcasing imaginative designs.
Visitors were further engaged through interactive sessions such as the recycled-material costume challenge, the Book Face Challenge, and the Info Hunt.
Exhibitions on the 5R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse, and Rethink) were held alongside demonstrations of 3D pens and 3D printing technology, offering participants hands-on experiences with innovative tools.
Adam Yii expressed appreciation to librarians, staff, volunteers and partners for their continuous role in promoting literacy and community involvement. He stressed that libraries are essential in shaping a knowledgeable and united society.
“Together, let us build a knowledgeable, united and sustainable Miri,” he said before officially launching the event.
The initiative reflects Sarawak’s broader commitment to community development, where libraries are increasingly recognised as platforms for education, creativity and civic engagement.
By combining traditional resources with modern technology and interactive programmes, MCC aims to ensure libraries remain relevant and impactful in the digital age.
