MARUDI — Sarawak is moving ahead with a major plan to upgrade all main roads leading to longhouses and villages across the state into fully maintained public roads, funded entirely by the Sarawak Government.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said the initiative is a clear commitment to improve rural connectivity and ensure every community, no matter how remote, enjoys safe and reliable access.
Speaking at the launching ceremony of the Miri-Marudi, Marudi-Mulu (Kuala Melinau), and Long Lama–Long Panai (MMMLL) road projects at the Marudi Industrial Light Area on Thursday, he stressed that the government would not rely on external funding.
“This is not just rhetoric. We will develop these roads with Sarawak’s own funds because we cannot wait for others,” he said.
“To raise funds for the project, leave it to me. It is my responsibility as the leader.”
He explained that a special team led by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas will oversee the maintenance of these upgraded public roads, ensuring long-term quality and safety.
The Premier pointed out that the MMMLL road project is a strong example of how new main roads will connect villages and longhouses across Baram, easing daily travel and improving economic opportunities for local communities.
He added that all main road upgrades must be completed by 2030, in line with Sarawak’s development goals. This target is expected to greatly enhance accessibility for rural residents, especially those who rely heavily on road links for schooling, healthcare, and trade.
Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari also revealed that the MMMLL project will adopt a new construction method that includes elevated roads supported by poles. This design helps avoid unstable soil and ensures stronger, longer-lasting roads — an important consideration in challenging terrains.
The project will also utilise Highway Information Modeling (HIM), a digital simulation system that allows engineers to study construction needs, soil conditions, rainfall, and wind factors before work begins.
