Betong KMKK Panel Confirms New Term for Community Leaders

BETONG – The Community and Tribal Leaders (KMKK) Selection Panel in Betong Division has convened to finalise the appointment and extension of grassroots leaders for the new term, reinforcing the importance of continuity in village and longhouse governance.

The meeting, held at the Kenyalang Meeting Room, Betong Division Resident’s Office, was chaired by Datu Richard Michael Abunawas, Betong Division Resident.

He emphasised that strong and consistent leadership at the community level is vital to ensure smooth delivery of government services and to address local needs effectively.

Datu Richard explained that the re-evaluation process serves as a mechanism to ensure that only leaders with integrity, capability, and commitment are entrusted with responsibilities.

“This process is crucial to guarantee that qualified individuals continue to lead their communities, ensuring trust and efficiency in governance,” he said.

For the Kabong State Constituency (DUN), under the jurisdiction of the Kabong District Office and Roban Sub-District Office, the panel reached several key decisions:

  • Five Community Heads (KM) were extended in service.
  • One new Tribal Head (KK) was appointed.
  • 28 Tribal Heads (KK) received service extensions.
  • Five Tribal Heads (KK) had their service terminated.
  • One Tribal Head (KK) was placed under Under Attention (KIV) status.

The meeting was attended by several notable figures, including Kalaka State Assemblyman Mohamad Duri, Krian Assemblyman Friday Belik, Kabong District Officer Tahir Mohd Sharee, and Nur Elffi Amir, Special Administrative Officer to the Kabong Assemblyman, alongside other guests.

The decisions made reflect the government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening grassroots leadership structures, ensuring that communities across Betong and Kabong benefit from effective representation.

Officials noted that the process balances continuity with accountability, allowing experienced leaders to continue while also introducing new appointments where necessary.

Community leadership under the KMKK framework plays a crucial role in bridging local governance with state-level development initiatives.

By ensuring that leaders are carefully selected and evaluated, the Sarawak Government aims to maintain stability and responsiveness in rural administration.

The panel’s outcomes are expected to contribute to stronger community organisation, improved service delivery, and enhanced collaboration between local leaders and government agencies in the coming term.
