LUNDU – The long-awaited Tanjong Purun Paddy Planting Scheme has taken a major step forward after 20 recipients received land compensation cheques totalling RM2.7 million under Phase 1 of the project.
The initiative, which has been in planning for eight years, is set to transform Tanjong Purun into one of Sarawak’s key rice-producing areas.
The handover ceremony, held at the Tanjong Datu Service Centre Office on Wednesday, was officiated by Tanjong Datu State Assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan.
In his address, he expressed gratitude to all agencies involved, particularly the Sarawak Land and Survey Department, for their efforts in realising the project.
Phase 1 covers 30 lots of land, while Phase 2 and Phase 3 are expected to follow in due course. According to Awang Nazri Awang Sap, Kuching Divisional Land and Survey Superintendent, a total of 187 hectares of land has been allocated for the scheme, which carries an overall value of RM50 million.
The project is designed to boost Sarawak’s food security by expanding paddy cultivation, ensuring that the state can meet rising demand for rice.
Officials believe that once fully operational, Tanjong Purun will play a central role in strengthening Sarawak’s agricultural output and reducing reliance on imports.
The ceremony was attended by Lundu District Officer Awang Yusup Awang Mostapha, Diana Pellipus from the Sarawak Ministry of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development (M-FICORD), as well as community leaders Pemanca Jumahdi Sabian and Penghulu Jamer Katai.
Their presence reflected the collaborative effort between government agencies and local leadership in driving rural development.
Community members welcomed the compensation as a sign of progress, noting that the project will not only enhance agricultural productivity but also create new opportunities for local farmers.
The initiative is expected to generate long-term socio-economic benefits, including job creation, improved infrastructure, and greater stability for rural households.
With Phase 1 now underway, the Tanjong Purun Paddy Planting Scheme is poised to become a landmark project in Sarawak’s agricultural transformation, reinforcing the state’s commitment to sustainable food production and rural prosperity.
