Anwar’s Historic Visit to Ethiopia Was Marked by a Ceremonial Welcome

ADDIS ABABA – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim received a ceremonial welcome at Ethiopia’s Istana Negara, underscoring the strengthening of diplomatic and economic ties between Malaysia and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

The official ceremony, held at the historic Istana Jubli in central Addis Ababa, included an inspection of the guard of honour and the playing of both nations’ anthems.

Anwar was greeted by Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali, with senior Malaysian ministers and Ethiopian officials present.

As part of the symbolic gestures, both leaders planted an oil palm tree in the palace gardens, representing Malaysia’s agricultural expertise and Ethiopia’s commitment to expanding cooperation.

The act highlighted Malaysia’s readiness to share knowledge in palm oil cultivation and Ethiopia’s interest in diversifying its agricultural base.

The visit also featured a tour of the Istana Negara Museum, where Anwar and his delegation viewed Ethiopia’s cultural artefacts and historical relics.

Anwar remarked that Ethiopia’s dedication to preserving its heritage serves as inspiration for future generations, ensuring that its national identity remains vibrant and relevant.

Beyond ceremonial events, the trip marked a significant leap in bilateral relations. Malaysia and Ethiopia signed four memoranda of understanding (MoUs) covering air services, health, tourism, and city-level cooperation between Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Addis Ababa’s administration.

These agreements are expected to open new avenues for trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges.

At a joint press conference, Anwar emphasised Malaysia’s intent to explore new markets in Africa and beyond, noting Ethiopia’s strategic position as host of the African Union headquarters.

“Diplomatic engagements must result in strong economic fundamentals, trade and investments,” he said.

Dr Abiy Ahmed described the visit as “a new chapter in South–South partnership,” highlighting Ethiopia’s interest in learning from Malaysia’s success in industrial parks, electronics, and youth employment initiatives.

Malaysia also proposed wider market access for Ethiopian products while seeking tariff reviews on palm oil exports.

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz noted Ethiopia’s role as a gateway for Malaysian goods into Africa, while Malaysia could serve as a hub for Ethiopian exports to ASEAN.

The reopening of Malaysia’s embassy in Addis Ababa in September 2025 after a 42-year hiatus further reinforced the commitment to long-term engagement.

This historic visit, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations, is widely seen as a turning point in Malaysia-Ethiopia ties, paving the way for deeper collaboration in trade, technology, and cultural exchange.
