ADDIS ABABA – Malaysia and Ethiopia have taken a major step forward in strengthening bilateral ties with the signing and exchange of several landmark documents during Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s official visit to Addis Ababa.
The agreements, witnessed by Anwar and Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali, cover a wide range of strategic areas.
These include an Air Services Agreement, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Health Cooperation, an MoU on Tourism, and a cooperation pact between Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Addis Ababa City Hall.
Additionally, both governments announced the Exchange of Notes to commence regular bilateral consultations, establishing a structured mechanism for ongoing dialogue.
Speaking at a joint press conference, Anwar emphasised that these initiatives reflect the determination of both nations to build a more inclusive and competitive framework for relations, ensuring that progress is felt directly by the people of Malaysia and Ethiopia.
“We reaffirm our commitment to strengthen Malaysia–Ethiopia relations in all dimensions based on genuine friendship and mutual trust,” he said.
The agreements are expected to open new opportunities in aviation, healthcare, and tourism, while also fostering closer cooperation at the municipal level.
The establishment of regular consultations marks a significant milestone, providing a platform for both sides to address challenges, explore new ventures, and ensure that cooperation runs smoothly and delivers tangible benefits.
Dr Abiy echoed similar sentiments, noting that Ethiopia values Malaysia’s role as a partner in advancing economic and social development.
He highlighted that the agreements will not only enhance government-to-government ties but also encourage people-to-people exchanges, strengthening cultural understanding and connectivity.
This latest development builds on earlier commitments made during Anwar’s visit, including cooperation in trade, investment, education, and technology.
With Ethiopia set to host COP32 in 2027 and Malaysia pursuing membership in BRICS, both nations are positioning themselves as active players in shaping global economic and environmental agendas.
The exchange of documents signals a new chapter in Malaysia–Ethiopia relations, reinforcing the shared vision of a prosperous, inclusive, and mutually beneficial partnership.
