SEBUYAU – The Sarawak Government has announced a RM150 million allocation from its own funds to upgrade the electricity supply system in the Samarahan Division, including Sebuyau.
The initiative, unveiled by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, aims to meet rising energy demand and improve reliability for communities in the region.
Speaking at the launch of the Samarahan Division Electricity Supply Upgrade Project at Kampung Sampat Hall, Sebangan, the Premier explained that although the Federal Government had previously allocated funding, delays in implementation prompted Sarawak to take independent action.
“The upgrade includes the construction of two main substations in Asajaya and Sebuyau, in addition to the installation of modern cables that are safer and more durable to reduce tripping and short circuit incidents,” he said.
The RM150 million project will introduce three-phase electricity supply across Samarahan and Sebuyau, addressing frequent disruptions, particularly during festive seasons when consumption peaks.
The Premier emphasised that the investment reflects Sarawak’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to modern infrastructure, regardless of location.
Abang Johari further revealed that once the Samarahan upgrade is completed, similar projects will be extended to Betong Division. This phased expansion is part of a broader plan to ensure that within five to seven years, the entire state will operate on three-phase electricity.
“This will boost rural development to a better level,” he added, highlighting the importance of reliable energy in supporting economic growth and improving quality of life.
The event was attended by key state leaders, including Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Sarawak Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, and State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
Their presence underscored the government’s collective commitment to advancing infrastructure development across Sarawak.
The electricity upgrade is expected to not only enhance supply stability but also support industrial and agricultural activities in rural areas, aligning with Sarawak’s long-term vision of balanced development between urban and rural communities.
