SINGAPORE – An unexpected encounter took place at Seletar Airport on Sunday evening as Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi crossed paths with Malaysia’s former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.
The meeting occurred shortly before the Governor and his delegation departed for Kuching following a four-day official visit to Singapore.
Both couples exchanged greetings and handshakes in the departure lounge, marking a cordial moment between distinguished Malaysian figures.
The chance encounter was described as a reminder of the close-knit nature of Malaysia’s leadership community.
Tun Dr Mahathir appeared to be in good health, while Tun Dr Siti Hasmah was noted to be experiencing some vision difficulties. Despite this, both were warmly engaged in conversation.
It is understood that Tun Dr Mahathir and Tun Dr Siti Hasmah were in Singapore to attend an alumni reunion programme.
Their presence at the airport coincided with the Governor’s departure, creating the opportunity for the brief but meaningful exchange.
Tun Wan Junaidi and Toh Puan Fauziah conveyed their prayers and well wishes for the continued health and prosperity of Tun Dr Mahathir and Tun Dr Siti Hasmah.
The gesture reflected respect and goodwill, reinforcing the bonds of friendship among Malaysia’s senior statesmen and leaders.
The Governor’s visit to Singapore had earlier included meetings with officials and discussions on regional cooperation, sustainable development, and digital innovation.
The chance meeting at Seletar Airport added a personal dimension to the trip, highlighting the informal yet significant connections that often accompany official engagements.
As the delegation returned to Kuching, the encounter was seen as a symbolic moment, bridging generations of Malaysian leadership and underscoring the enduring ties between Sarawak and the wider national community.
