PETROS Powers Sarawak’s Energy Transition and Low-Carbon Industrial Future

KUCHING – Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) has emerged as a key driver of Sarawak’s energy transformation, evolving from a newly established state-owned company in 2017 into one of Malaysia’s leading oil and gas equity producers.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg highlighted that Sarawak is reshaping its energy landscape through the Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR), which prioritises the use of domestic gas resources to meet local demand.

He explained that this strategy will also support the creation of new industrial hubs in Miri, Samalaju, Bintulu, and Kuching, generating high-income employment opportunities for Sarawakians.

The Premier noted that PETROS is spearheading efforts to revitalise onshore hydrocarbon resources by adopting advanced technologies and forging international partnerships.

In collaboration with the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security, exploration activities are underway in the Mukah-Balingian area.

Pilot projects in Miri and studies stretching from Limbang to Mukah are utilising modern imaging technologies to assess onshore potential more effectively.

He emphasised that these initiatives are being pursued in a careful, data-driven manner to ensure long-term value for the state and its people.

Further progress has been recorded in infrastructure development, with the Bintulu–Samalaju gas pipeline project and its distribution network advancing steadily.

This project is expected to provide a competitive and reliable energy supply, laying the foundation for Sarawak’s diverse and high-value industrial base.

In Kuching, PETROS is leading Sarawak’s low-carbon agenda through the establishment of the Kuching Low Carbon Hub, developed in partnership with global anchor firms.

The hub is envisioned as the cornerstone of a green industrial cluster, supporting cleaner gas-fired power generation, low-carbon industries, and future carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) facilities.

Complementary investments in energy, transport, and port infrastructure will reinforce this transformation.

The Premier stressed that PETROS’s achievements have strengthened Sarawak’s credibility among investors. “Every achievement by PETROS strengthens Sarawak’s credibility, where investors are now not only looking at Sarawak but beginning to commit to the state because they trust its vision, governance and resolve,” he said.

These developments reflect Sarawak’s broader ambition to balance energy security with sustainability, positioning the state as a competitive hub for both traditional and low-carbon industries in Southeast Asia.
