International artists from China and West Java arrive for two-day cultural showcase
KUCHING, 4 December 2025 — Sarawak is gearing up for a major cultural celebration as two distinguished international groups arrived this week to take part in the Sarawak International Festival of Music and Arts (SIFMA) 6, scheduled for 6–7 December 2025. Their presence brings new artistic depth to the festival, strengthening Sarawak’s reputation as a regional hub for cultural exchange and performing arts.
A 12-member ensemble representing the rich cultural landscape of West Java is among the first to be welcomed. Known for their mastery of Sundanese performing arts, Nataraharja and Puspa Karima will present traditional art forms that have been passed down through generations. Their performances will highlight Jaipongan, a lively and expressive dance style beloved across Indonesia; Wayang Golek, the famed wooden puppet theatre that blends storytelling, humour, and folklore; and Kawih Sunda, a genre of traditional Sundanese songs known for its emotional depth and melodic flow.
Festival organisers say the group’s participation will offer Sarawakians a rare opportunity to witness authentic Sundanese cultural expressions as they are traditionally performed in West Java. The ensemble is expected to deliver two days of rhythmic energy and captivating cultural narratives.
Sarawak has also extended a warm welcome to Hu Chenyun, one of China’s most respected suona performers and a celebrated conductor. A First-Class National Artist of China and a prominent member of the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, Hu has built an international reputation through performances in more than 40 countries. His appearances on top global stages and collaborations with leading orchestras across Asia, Europe, and the United States place him among the world’s finest traditional instrumentalists.
His participation in SIFMA 6 is widely regarded as a major honour for the festival. Organisers note that Hu’s artistry and global stature will offer local audiences a powerful display of musicianship rooted in Chinese tradition but performed at an elite international level.
With these distinguished guests now in Sarawak, anticipation for SIFMA 6 continues to build. The two-day festival promises a vibrant display of cultural heritage, musical excellence, and cross-border artistic unity — all on one stage.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to follow upcoming announcements for the full performance schedule.
