Sarawak Premier in Bangkok for WDCE 2025 Keynote on Water

BANGKOKSarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg arrived in Thailand on Monday to participate in the IWA Water and Development Congress & Exhibition 2025 (WDCE 2025).

The Premier is scheduled to deliver a keynote address titled “Water: Driving Sarawak’s Resilient and Sustainable Future” at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre on Tuesday morning.

His speech will highlight Sarawak’s strategies for water resource management, resilience, and sustainable development, aligning with global discussions on water challenges in low- and middle-income countries.

Abang Johari landed at Don Mueang International Airport at 12.25pm local time, where he was received by Ahmad Hashim Mahmood, Minister at the Malaysian Embassy in Thailand. Upon arrival at his hotel, he was welcomed by Malaysian Ambassador Datuk Wan Zaidi Wan Abdullah.

The Premier is accompanied by Sarawak Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi and Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, reflecting the state’s strong delegation to the international event.

WDCE, organised by the International Water Association (IWA), is a major global platform addressing water and development issues. The congress brings together policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders to discuss solutions for sustainable water management, particularly in developing regions.

Sarawak’s participation underscores the state’s commitment to advancing water infrastructure and resilience.

The Premier has consistently emphasised the importance of water as a driver of socio-economic growth, especially in rural and semi-urban areas where access to clean water remains a priority.

The congress is expected to provide opportunities for Sarawak to share its experiences, learn from international best practices, and strengthen partnerships in water-related innovation.

With climate change and rapid urbanisation posing challenges worldwide, the Premier’s keynote is anticipated to highlight Sarawak’s integrated approach to sustainability and community well-being.

The WDCE 2025 programme will run throughout the week, featuring technical sessions, exhibitions, and networking events.

Delegates from across Asia, Africa, and Latin America are attending, making it one of the most significant gatherings on water and development in the global calendar.
