“If we want a more developed Sibu and Sarawak, we need to start from here, from the school and from our children,” he said in a speech delivered by Councillor Kevin Lau at the Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Kiang Hin dinner on Wednesday.

Datuk Michael described SJKC Kiang Hin as a vibrant institution that embodies family values and community spirit.

He expressed appreciation to the school’s board of directors and the Kapitan for their dedication in maintaining a conducive learning environment, despite the challenges of sustaining national-type schools.

He also praised teachers for their vital role in shaping students beyond academics. Teachers, he said, instil discipline, confidence and moral values, serving as role models for the younger generation. “Teachers not only teach subjects, but also shape students’ morals and self-confidence,” he added.

Datuk Michael reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting schools like SJKC Kiang Hin by improving facilities, upgrading infrastructure and implementing programmes that benefit students. He stressed that such efforts are essential to ensure that schools remain strong pillars in the state’s education system.

The emphasis on primary education reflects Sarawak’s broader vision of building a skilled and confident generation capable of driving development.
