Gemas-Johor Bahru Electric Double Track Opens, Boosting National Connectivity

JOHOR BAHRU – Malaysia marked a historic milestone in transport development with the official completion and operation of the Gemas-Johor Bahru Electric Double Track, a project hailed as a strategic achievement in strengthening the nation’s rail network.

The ceremony, officiated by the Regent of Johor, His Royal Highness Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim, celebrated the successful delivery of the project by SIPP-YTL. Extending the electric rail line from Padang Besar to Johor Bahru, the development is seen as a landmark in modernising Malaysia’s transport infrastructure.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim congratulated all parties involved, noting that the timely completion of the project demonstrates the capability of local contractors to deliver world-class infrastructure.

He emphasised that this achievement reflects the MADANI Economy approach, where development is not only a matter of pride but also requires government intervention, moral persuasion and private sector collaboration to ensure benefits reach all levels of society.

Johor’s strong economy, which has now surpassed several states including Penang and Selangor, was highlighted as a key driver of national progress. The Prime Minister stressed that Johor’s growth should not be viewed as competition, but as a factor that strengthens Malaysia’s unity and spirit.

The Johor-Singapore Economic Zone was described as a catalyst for sustainable growth, with the rail project complementing existing infrastructure such as ports, highways and airports. The addition of 11 new stations along smaller towns on the route is expected to stimulate new economic activity, creating opportunities for local communities.

“What we are witnessing today is evidence of participatory democracy, where the views of the state are respected in the national development process,” Anwar said, adding that the operation of the track represents an accelerated leap forward for Johor and Malaysia as a whole.

The Gemas-Johor Bahru Electric Double Track is expected to enhance mobility, generate economic opportunities and reinforce Malaysia’s position as a modern, connected nation.
